How the Weight Loss Percentage Is Calculated

The formula for weight loss percentage is simple:

Weight loss percentage = (Weight lost ÷ Starting weight) × 100

For example, if you started at 200 lbs and now weigh 185 lbs, you’ve lost 15 lbs.

(15 ÷ 200) × 100 = 7.5% weight loss.

This calculator is designed for adults and for general tracking purposes only. For any medical conditions or significant weight changes, always speak with a healthcare professional.

What Does My Weight Loss Percentage Mean?

Percentage lost helps you see progress in a way that’s easier to compare over time or between people of different sizes.

Common Ways People Use This Number

  • Tracking progress in a medical or supervised weight loss program.
  • Setting milestones such as “lose 5% of my starting weight.”
  • Seeing long-term progress even when weekly changes are small.

Many programs consider a loss of around 5–10% of starting body weight to be a meaningful improvement in health markers for many people. The exact number that’s right for you depends on your health history, current weight, and goals.

Sample Weight Loss Milestones

Use this table to get a feel for what different weight loss percentages look like for various starting weights.

Starting Weight 5% Loss 10% Loss 15% Loss
160 lbs 8 lbs (152 lbs) 16 lbs (144 lbs) 24 lbs (136 lbs)
200 lbs 10 lbs (190 lbs) 20 lbs (180 lbs) 30 lbs (170 lbs)
240 lbs 12 lbs (228 lbs) 24 lbs (216 lbs) 36 lbs (204 lbs)
280 lbs 14 lbs (266 lbs) 28 lbs (252 lbs) 42 lbs (238 lbs)
Even a modest 5–10% reduction in body weight can help improve blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels for many people. If you’re not sure what a realistic target is for you, a medically supervised program can help.
