Botox Injection in Baltimore, MD | Green Relief Health, LLC

Overview of BOTOX®

BOTOX® is made from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacteria that causes botulism. Though it originates from this toxic bacteria, BOTOX® injections used in medical aesthetic treatments contain highly purified and diluted amounts of the toxin, which are safe and fully approved by the FDA.

BOTOX® injections work by temporarily blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. As a result, wrinkles and facial expressions on the face are smoothed out since muscles do not contract. It’s most commonly used cosmetically on wrinkles between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet.

Besides its cosmetic applications, BOTOX® also has medical uses. It can treat muscular conditions like eyelid spasms, neck spasms, muscle stiffness, and overactive bladder. BOTOX® injections can also prevent chronic migraines and excessive sweating.

Though the muscle-paralyzing effects of BOTOX® are temporary, most patients see visible smoothing of facial wrinkles for 3-4 months after treatment. Over time, the repeated paralysis allows treated wrinkles to become less severe. With ongoing maintenance appointments every 3-4 months, patients can maintain their youthful appearance with BOTOX®.

Why Choose BOTOX®

There are several reasons patients may choose BOTOX®:

Cosmetic Reasons:

  • Relieves fine lines and wrinkles on the upper face, including frown lines, forehead creases, and    crow’s feet—resulting in a more relaxed, smooth facial appearance.
  • Corrects asymmetry by lifting eyebrows, opening up the eyes, or balancing uneven expressions.
  • Lifts the corners of the mouth into a subtly smiling expression.
  • Minimizes the appearance of platysmal bands on the neck.

Medical Reasons:

  1. Reduces chronic migraine frequency and severity.
  2. Treats excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis).
  3. Relieves muscle spasticity disorders.
  4. Treats overactive bladder and urinary incontinence symptoms.

How BOTOX® Works

BOTOX® contains highly purified botulinum toxin, which blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Upon injection, it prevents muscle fibers from contracting.

The mechanism of action is through interrupting the connection between nerves and muscles. Signals that tell muscle fibers to contract are blocked, resulting in localized paralysis. This is what allows BOTOX® to inhibit facial movements that form wrinkles and creases.

Most patients begin seeing initial results from BOTOX® injections within 5-7 days after treatment, but the product can take up to 14 days for complete results. The immobilizing effects of BOTOX® injections typically last for 3-4 months.

Over time, repeated BOTOX® treatments train muscles to remain relaxed with less pronounced wrinkles and lines. Due to this cumulative benefit, some patients can extend their treatment frequency over time.

Most Common Treatment Areas for BOTOX® Injections

BOTOX® is highly effective for minimizing signs of facial aging. The most popular areas for treatment are:

  • Forehead Lines – BOTOX® smoothes horizontal creases across the forehead for a more relaxed, lifted appearance.
  • Frown Lines – Softens the moderate to severe vertical lines between eyebrows, contributing to an angry or stressed look.
  • Crow’s Feet – Greatly reduces fine wrinkles extending outward from the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Bunny Lines – Subdues wrinkles on the sides of the nose for a more refined profile. Helps achieve facial symmetry.
  • Lip Lines – Minimizes vertical lines above and around lips that contribute to a smoker’s pout. Creates a subtle, youthful smile.
  • Neck Bands – Weakens ropey neck muscle bands that create vertical cords down the neck. Results in a smoother, more youthful neck contour.
  • Underarm Sweating – Significantly reduces excessive sweating in 80-90% of patients with axillary hyperhidrosis.

Safety and Potential Side Effects

When administered properly, BOTOX® injections are safe for most patients. However, temporary side effects can sometimes occur in the first week after the procedure. Potential adverse reactions include:

  • Pain or tenderness at the injection sites
  • Light bruising around injection points
  • Minor swelling, redness of the skin
  • Headaches
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Droopy eyelid (ptosis)
  • Crooked smile
  • Asymmetry of facial expressions
  • Dry eyes or excessive tearing (due to diffusion)

These problems typically resolve on their own. Using sterile techniques, precise dosages, and an experienced injector reduces the risk of complications. More serious side effects from improper BOTOX® diffusion are rare when performed by a qualified medical professional.

Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders may face increased risks with BOTOX®. These include myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, ALS, and other nerve-signal disorders. BOTOX® could potentially aggravate muscle weakness symptoms associated with these conditions.

People who are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant should avoid BOTOX®. The effects on fetal development are unknown. Patients should notify their provider if they suffer from any bleeding disorders as well since injections can increase the risks of bruising and hematoma formation.

Outside of the first two weeks following injections, contact your doctor if you experience any loss of strength, muscle weakness, problems breathing or swallowing, flu symptoms, or signs of an allergic reaction after your BOTOX® treatment session.

Preparing for BOTOX® Appointments

Preparing for your BOTOX® appointment helps ensure the best results:

  • Discontinue blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, Vitamin E, etc., one week prior if approved by your physician to minimize bruising.
  • Alcohol consumption 24 hours before your treatment can increase your risk of bleeding or bruises.
  • Come to your appointment with a thoroughly cleansed face – don’t wear makeup, creams, or oils.
  • Be well-hydrated leading up to your treatment by drinking more water.

During the BOTOX® Procedure

Our medical professionals perform BOTOX® injections in a private medical room using sterilized techniques to prevent infection. No downtime is required after the procedure, which can take as little as 15 minutes.

After cleansing the treatment areas, the injector will administer multiple tiny injections of BOTOX® using an ultrafine needle. Most patients tolerate the quick needle sticks well. We can combine BOTOX® with dermal fillers for an integrated non-surgical facelift and full facial rejuvenation.

Aftercare Following BOTOX®

To ensure the toxin doesn’t move away from the injection sites, avoid any contact or massage on the treated areas for at least 4 hours following your BOTOX® session. Also, refrain from strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Some temporary redness, swelling, and tenderness may occur on the first day. Use Tylenol as needed for discomfort – avoid blood thinning medications. Sleep face up with your head elevated on pillows if any swelling develops. Most side effects resolve quickly within 2 to 3 days.

Longevity of BOTOX® Results

You will start to see BOTOX® results take effect 5-7 days after your injections. Optimal wrinkle relaxation becomes apparent within two weeks as the active toxin fully reaches all muscle fiber junctions.

BOTOX® effects typically last for 3-4 months for the average patient. Those new to BOTOX® may see shorter-lived results closer to 12 weeks between treatments. With repeated BOTOX® over time, results can last longer between maintenance sessions due to the muscle-training effect.

Important Safety Information

Following the use of BOTOX®, you may experience general muscle weakness, which is common and will resolve. Although very rare, serious and/or immediate allergic reactions can occur, including itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or feeling faint. Get medical help right away if you experience signs of a possible life-threatening allergic reaction.

BOTOX® treatments and other botulinum toxin-based products can, in extremely rare circumstances, result in complications with swallowing or breathing, particularly in patients with pre-existing issues in these areas. Often, this happens due to a weakening of the muscles in the injection area that are critical for breathing or the oropharyngeal muscles, which are key for swallowing and breathing.

Make sure your doctor is aware of any muscle or nerve-related conditions you may have, such as ALS, myasthenia gravisor, Lou Gehrig’s disease, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, because this might increase your susceptibility to serious side effects.
