A dermal filler is an injectable gel, most often hyaluronic acid, placed under the skin to restore volume that has been lost or to reshape a feature. Results are visible the same day and settle over about two weeks.
Volume loss is structural. Fat pads thin, bone remodels and skin loses elasticity, so the midface flattens, temples hollow, the jawline softens and folds deepen from the nose to the mouth. Filler addresses that directly by replacing what has gone, in the plane where it was lost.

The Basics
What are Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers, or soft tissue fillers, are injections specifically used to make facial wrinkles less noticeable, restore volume and fullness in the face, and enhance facial contours.
They work by plumping skin from beneath the surface to instantly smooth lines and wrinkles and create a subtle lift. Most modern fillers use hyaluronic acid, a natural component in the skin that ensures hydration and plumpness. Injected as a gel, these hyaluronic acid fillers offer a temporary solution for restoring skin volume. Depending on the product, results can last up to 2 years.
Dermal fillers are considered very safe, with minimal downtime, when a trained medical provider places them. They can add subtle volume to the cheeks, smooth the lines around the nose and mouth (the “parentheses” and marionette lines), plump thinning lips, soften vertical lines around the mouth, and fill some indented scars. The aim is a more rested, youthful facial appearance, not a different face.
How Dermal Fillers Work
Filler gel is injected in small amounts with an ultrafine needle, or a blunt cannula in some areas, at the depth each area needs: just under the skin for fine lines, deeper over bone for cheek and jawline support. The hyaluronic acid (HA) in today’s fillers is a hydrating substance that occurs naturally in the skin.
Once placed, HA gel attracts water molecules and integrates with the surrounding tissue, plumping the skin subtly from the inside out. Results from dermal fillers are immediate but look most natural about two weeks after treatment as the skin adjusts to the effect. Over the following months the filler is gradually and naturally absorbed, and touch-up injections maintain the result.
With precise injection techniques, dermal fillers can lift tissues, enhance facial contours, reduce wrinkles and folds, and restore a more vigorous, well-rested appearance. Patients look refreshed but not obviously “done.” Subtle improvements are key to creating natural yet rejuvenated looks.

Step 01
Preparing for Dermal Filler Injections
A consultation is always required before having dermal filler injections. This pretreatment consultation allows Dr. Lauren Nawrocki to assess facial anatomy, determine the right types and amounts of filler needed for optimal outcomes, and review expectations and aftercare. Patients receive complete information about all aspects of the filler procedure during the consultation. You learn which filler will be used, how many syringes are needed, the cost, the expected result and how long it lasts. You also hear which medications and activities to avoid beforehand to reduce bruising. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without your prescriber’s approval.
Step 02
During the Dermal Filler Appointment
The procedure is carried out in our office and generally lasts less than one hour from start to completion. Numbing cream can be applied beforehand for added comfort if desired, and most fillers contain lidocaine. Dr. Lauren Nawrocki uses special ultrafine needles to minimize discomfort during injections. Most patients describe filler injections as creating a pinching sensation, followed sometimes by mild pressure at the injection site. No general anesthesia is required. Ice packs help reduce swelling and tenderness. Most people return to their usual activities straight away, avoiding strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
Step 03
After the Dermal Filler Appointment
Do not rub or massage the treated areas unless you are told to, so the gel settles evenly. Some lingering swelling and redness are normal initially. Within two weeks, new contours and reduced lines and wrinkles emerge as swelling dissipates. Your two-week review confirms the result, and follow-up visits every 6 to 12 months, depending on the area and product, maintain it.

Longevity of Dermal Fillers Results
Results from quality hyaluronic acid fillers commonly last from about nine months to a year or more. Results vary based on individual factors like age, skin type, lifestyle, and injection areas. The skill of the injector and HA filler chosen also impact longevity. For instance, lip augmentation with Juvéderm can last up to 1 year, while Voluma filler for cheeks and midface volume loss can last up to 2 years for some patients. Regular, measured touch-ups keep the result refreshed without an overfilled look.

Safety and Side Effects of Dermal Fillers
When an experienced medical professional places them, dermal fillers are considered very safe, with few side effects. Most are temporary and resolve within a few days.
Important Safety Information
Filler should be injected only by a licensed medical professional with specific training in facial anatomy. Rarely, filler can enter or press on a blood vessel, blocking blood flow and causing tissue damage or, in severe cases, vision loss. That risk is why product choice, depth and technique matter.
Like all medical procedures, risks can occur despite the highest standards and care. Seek emergency help and contact your provider straight away for severe or worsening pain, skin blanching or mottling, blistering, vision changes, or any worrying sign days or weeks later. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme when needed.

What patients ask about filler
Does filler hurt?
Most patients describe it as pressure rather than pain. Numbing cream is used routinely, most fillers contain local anaesthetic, and a dental block is available for lips.
How long will it last?
It depends on the product and the area. Juvederm formulas typically last 12 to 18 months, Restylane 6 to 18 months, and Sculptra can hold for two years or more. Your metabolism, the treated area and the amount used all affect longevity. Areas that move constantly, such as lips, generally need refreshing sooner than cheeks.
Will I look overfilled?
Not if the plan is conservative. We treat in the amount your face supports, and we would rather bring you back for a small addition than place too much in one visit.
Can filler be removed?
Hyaluronic-acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme, which is one reason it is the first choice for most areas.
Can I have filler and Botox on the same day?
Usually yes. They treat different problems and are frequently combined; see Botox and Dysport for what that treats.
What does it cost?
Cost depends on the product and how much is used. You are quoted in writing at the consultation, before anything is scheduled.
What should I avoid before dermal filler?
To lower the chance of bruising, avoid alcohol and, where your prescriber agrees, over-the-counter blood-thinning products such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E for about a week beforehand. Never stop a prescribed medication on your own.
When will I see my filler results?
Right away, although swelling can exaggerate or mask the result for the first days. Filler looks most natural at about two weeks, which is when your review visit takes place.
What are the warning signs after filler?
Severe or increasing pain, skin turning white, grey or blotchy, blistering, or any change in vision needs urgent attention. Call the clinic straight away, and seek emergency care for vision changes.
